Computer Assisted Translation (CAT)

Now a day, automatic machine translation is not a good option because they are not able to produce unaided high standard translation. They require a human translator to make changes, if any, error occurs and improve the quality for the betterment. So, Computer assisted translation was introduced which make the process of translation, interactive among human translator and computer software. Generally, it is a form of language translation in which translators require Computer software for supporting and facilitating the process of translation is referred to as Computer Aided translation or Computer assisted translation (CAT). It is also known as Machine aided or machine assisted translation.

Due to the advancement in technology, the new CAT systems are developed that are the most efficient and effective translation systems, for example Controlled Machine Translation (MT). Some modules of MT are of high cost, as they provide a set of complex utilities to the translator. These tools include various language tools and utilities for example Terminology management features etc.

Tools Range:

Computer aided translation is a much broader term that includes a large range of tools and utilities, from easy to difficult. Mostly these CAT comprise of following range of tools:

  1. Spell Checkers: Mostly it is embedded in the word processing software, or can be used as an add-on program.
  2. Grammar Checkers: It is also built into the word processing system, or can be used as an add-on program.
  3. Terminology Managers: It permits the translators to manage and maintain their own electronic terminology bank. Its range varies from simple to complicated, for example, a table created in a spreadsheet, a database created in FileMaker Pro, robust software packages like Termex, LogiTerm and SDL MultiTerm.
  4. Unilingual and bilingual electronic dictionaries.
  5. Full-text Speech Tools: It is an indexer that permits the user to query the referenced documents or translated texts. For example, dtSearch Desktop, ISYS Search Software etc.
  6. Terminology databases: it can be accessed through the internet for example Termium plus and Grand dictionnaire terminologique.
  7. Bitext Aligners: It is a tool that aligns the source text and the translation that can also be examined through full-text search tool.
  8. Concordances: it is a program that is used to retrieve instances of the word and the context in monolingual, bilingual or multilingual corpus, for example bitext or a translation memory.
  9. Translation memory tools: TM tools consist of database of text segments in a language and translation in more than one target language.
  10. Project management software: it permits the linguists to construct the complex projects of translation, allocate the different tasks to many people and then track these tasks.

CAT Tools

Computer assisted translation tools are tools that will take your translation to the next level. There are many tools that make the work faster and increase the quality of translation.

Translation memory software

The main purpose of the translation memory software is to store the earlier translated text and its corresponding target text into the database and it also retrieves the segments during translation. It is used to lower the cost of translation, it also maintains consistency. Mostly translation memory software behaves like a standalone environment, while the other behaves like add-on or macro to word processing software programs. Add on programs permits source texts from other formats too, for example spreadsheets, a desktop publishing the files and HTML code etc. that can be handled through the TM software.

Terminology management software

TM tool has a database of terminologies, so it provides a means of searching the term present in the document either automatically or by the using hot keys for checking entry in the terminology database. Some advanced systems allow the translator to verify, whether right source or target term combination is used or not and whether it is used inside and across the segments of translation memory in that project. There are many independent TM systems that provide the workflow functionality, spell checker, visual taxonomy, and also support multilingual terms such as pictures, sounds and videos etc.

Language search engine software

The Language engine software is an internet base software which works exactly the same as internet search engine. It searches a huge storage of TM for finding the earlier translated phrases, sentences and paragraph that matches the source document. It was designed to influence the modern search technology to carry out the search that is based on the words to make sure that the results of a search is same as the meaning of source segments.

Interactive machine translation

It is a model that predicts and suggests the translation hypotheses, the translation that the human translator will produce. These hypotheses consist of part of a sentence or a complete sentence.

Alignment software

It obtains full translation and divides the source /target texts into segments. Then it determines that which segment fit together for building a translation memory. Most of the alignment software allows professional translators to realign incompatible segments by themselves.
