Common Translation Blunders

The translation task is very technical and it requires hands-on skills. The translators must have a very strong command of phraseology, syntax and etymology of words so that they may translate the text into its true meaning efficiently and effectively. The new translators usually suffer in some areas like the selection of accurate word as they really need to develop confidence along with the important rules of translation. In the beginning, the translation from non-native to the native language and vice versa takes time. Some issues that a novice translator has to face are client related issues like non-compliance, marketing failure or miscommunication.  The most common blunders are noted below;

  1. Word-to-Word Translation

The greatest mistake is to translate the script word-to-word instead of interpreting it in the same style in the other language as it is intended in the original script. The syntactic rules for different languages are different which the translator must understand before translating. The subject and the object must be well understood by the translator, like Arabic and English language has different syntax and cannot be justified in translating.

However, it is suggested that the translators should use a dictionary while translating a script as it helps in understanding the proper usage of words. The translation may also be reviewed by a native speaker to ensure the accuracy in the style of the script.

  1. Exaggerate the Meaning of Words

The overdone translation is also a result of inexperience mostly followed by the beginners. The novice translators try to give their best in the beginning and make this blunder. However, as a professional translator it is not appreciated to exaggerate the translation with complex sentences and technical words. Keeping things simple is sometimes more appropriate rather than complicating it.

It is very important to understand the requirement of the client and then do the task accordingly. The translators should never ignore any specifications or expectations of the client, one other important thing is to know the usage of the script as it will define the purpose of the document and the translator would be able to know the target audiences. The knowledge of standards of publishing is also important if the document is translated for the purpose of publishing.

  1. Use of Wrong Words

Vocabulary is established by experience, the beginners usually use it in the wrong context. Some words just cannot be translated into the other language, take an example of ‘Holy Grail’, it does not have an equivalent word in another language. The words that are associated with the religious and cultural processes cannot be interpreted in another language. Furthermore, the translators may also find it difficult to differ masculine and feminine nouns, a word may be treated as masculine in one language but differ in another language. It is important for a translator to get familiarized with the subtleties of the words for effective translation.

  1. Lacking in the Communication Skills

Communication skills usually lack in the beginners and it results in poor translation. The business communication acts as a liaison and a bridge between the translator and the client. The client must be engaged in two way communication for effective and efficient work. The translator needs to interact with the client on a different level of translation processes. Strong communication between these two parties lower the chances of any misunderstanding.

  1. Translation in the Appropriate Style

The styling of the script is an important aspect that is not fully understood by the beginners. As the translator is not familiar with the target language, hence the interpretation of the document gets inappropriate in the documentary style; such issues change the essence of the script. It is very important for the translator to translate the script in the accurate tone so that the document may convey the real meaning of the topic.
